Former TV anchor Eliott Rodriguez is the projected winner of the Democratic primary for Congress in Florida’s 27th District.

Who is Eliott Rodriguez?

Rodriguez is a former CBS Miami anchor who entered a Democratic primary field larger than usual.

Political analyst Alex Penelas said many Democrats believe there could be a “blue wave” nationwide and that some view Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar as vulnerable, though he noted it remains early and she is still considered the favorite.

Rodriguez said immigration and the rising cost of living pushed him into the race.

“When we see abuses against immigrants, when we see the cost of living in Miami continuing to rise, they say nothing,” he said.

He also said his background keeps him closely connected to the community.

“I know every corner of the district. I know people’s needs and concerns because I’ve spent my career talking to them,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriquez will face off against incumbent Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar on Nov. 3.
