School is back in session, and thanks to the generosity of countless nonprofits, businesses, churches, and civic organizations, thousands of South Florida students are starting the new school year with backpacks, school supplies, and the confidence they need to succeed.
On the evening of Aug. 4, Miami-Dade County Commission chair Anthony Rodriguez, Univista Insurance, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office joined forces at Miller’s Pond Park for a massive backpack and school supply giveaway that helped ensure local children were ready for their first day of school. Similar events were taking place throughout Miami-Dade County as organizations rallied to support families.
A few days earlier, on Aug. 1, Miami-Dade County Commissioner JC Bermudez hosted his fourth annual Back-to-School Bash at Miami International Mall. One highlight was the participation of the Miami-Dade Public Library System, where families could learn about the library’s many educational resources and even sign up for library cards on the spot — an excellent reminder that learning extends well beyond the classroom.
Mall manager Maria Prado always goes the extra mile to make this day special and there were an impressive number of volunteers on hand to make sure all went smoothly.
The business community remained active throughout the summer. The World Trade Center Miami, one of South Florida’s premier international trade organizations, continues to connect business leaders through networking, educational programs, and major trade events.
On July 30, WTC Miami members and guests gathered at the organization’s beautiful headquarters near Miami International Airport for an evening of networking and reconnecting with colleagues. Among those attending were many familiar faces, including Nildo Schubert Jr., Roberto Hernandez, Maria Herrera, Samuel Espinoza, Carmen Ruiz Rojas, and Cecilia Orbegozo.
The momentum continued with the WTCA North America Trade Forum held recently at The Biltmore Hotel. Many participants now are preparing for one of the region’s largest international trade events — the Americas Food & Beverage Show & Conference, taking place Sept. 14-16 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Congratulations also go to Lisa Albizu Vazquez, who has been named the new executive director of the South Dade Chamber of Commerce.
A respected community leader, educator and former Junior Orange Bowl president, Lisa brings years of experience and enthusiasm to her new role, and the chamber is well-positioned for continued growth under her leadership.
Finally, there’s still time to reserve your seat for the GFWC Doral West Dade Woman’s Club’s VIP party bus trip on Saturday, Aug. 22, to experience the spectacular Napoleon: The Immersive Saga and Colosseum: The Legendary Arena virtual reality exhibits at South Florida PBS in Boynton Beach.
Guests will board the luxury party bus at 3 p.m. from Miami International Mall, where the fun begins immediately with food, beverages, games, and the opportunity to mingle and meet new friends. Following an exclusive after-hours VIP visit to both immersive experiences, everyone will enjoy dinner, trivia, prizes, and more entertainment on the ride home with Vivo Sports & Social’s Steven Bradley as emcee.
