TAMPA, Fla. — Across the Bay area on Tuesday, multiple candidates advanced in school board races in several counties. Here’s a closer look at some of those races:
In Pinellas County, the school board District 6 race between Nancy Bostock and Amanda Lord came down to a razor-thin margin. That race will have a machine recount.
Bostock served on the Pinellas County School Board from 1998 to 2008.
Lord was a PTA president endorsed by the Pinellas Classroom Teachers Association.
Meanwhile, the District 3 race will go to a runoff in November.
That race will be between current school board vice chair Dawn Peters and Curtis Campogni, who is running as an outsider but is endorsed by the teacher’s union. Peters had 36% of the vote to Campogni’s 35%.
Also, incumbent Lisa Cane earned 54.7% of the vote in District 2. She beat Nancy Velardi (45% of the vote), a retired teacher and former teachers’ union president.
In Hillsborough County, there will be two November school board matchups.
In District 2, Daniela Simic finished first with nearly 39% of the vote; Brittany Lyssy, an attorney, followed with about 37%. They’ll face each other again in November.
Simic is the former assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for Hillsborough County Schools.
And in District 6, current school board chair Karen Perez came close to avoiding a runoff.
But she fell short with just over 48% of the vote. She’ll face second-place finisher Kenneth Gay, a retired educator, in November.
In Pasco County, Kimberly D. Coward and Gino Collura advanced to a November runoff for the District 1 seat. In District 3, Matt Geiger and Mollyana Ward advanced, and District 5 saw Megan Harding win with 72.2% of the vote.
