Republicans and Democrats fought to win their respective party’s nomination Aug. 18 during Florida’s primary election and advance to the Nov. 3 general election. If there were no challengers, the candidate wins the seat on election night.
In nonpartisan elections with three or more candidates, such as city and school boards, the winner had to get 50% plus one vote. If no one did, the two top vote-getters will face off in the Nov. 3 general election.

Leroy advances in St. Lucie County Commission District 4 race

Jean Eddy Leroy is running for St. Lucie County Commission District 4
Jean Eddy Leroy just barely defeated Roger Messer in the Aug. 18 Democratic primary for St. Lucie County Commission District 4, according to final but unofficial results.
Leroy will advance to the Nov. 3 general election and face Republican incumbent Jamie Lee Fowler and Nicholas Burgos, who is running with no party affiliation.
The winner will make about $100,000 a year for the four-year term. They’ll represent the whole county, but they must live in District 4, which encompasses the central and northwestern areas of the county, including St. Lucie West, White City and the Spanish Lakes communities.

Clarke reelected to Stuart City Commission Group V seat

According to final unofficial results, incumbent Eula Clarke celebrates winning the Stuart City Commission Group 5 seat during her election party on primary election day, Aug. 18, 2026, at the Pelican Hotel. Clarke, 69, has been on the Stuart City Commission since 2011 and will serve another four years. She faced business owner Kylie Micciche, 21, and content producer Dayne Oldenborg, 31, who is a former insurance agent.
Fifteen-year incumbent Eula Clarke was reelected to the Stuart City Commission after defeating newcomers Kylie Micciche and Dayne Oldenborg.

Heard reelected to Martin County Commission District 4 seat

Merritt Matheson wins back Stuart Commission Group III seat

St. Lucie faces “anomaly,” precinct results delayed by error

Two St. Lucie County precincts didn’t upload a small amount of ballots to the correct secured servers, Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker told TCPalm.
“We had a real anomaly happen,” Walker said.
The website shows 62 out of 62 precincts completed reporting as of 9:47 p.m., but election day results remain “partially reported.”
Martin and Indian River counties both fully completed reporting.

Lisa Kessler is a candidate running for St. Lucie County School Board District 5.
Troy Ingersoll — who is seeking a sixth term on the St. Lucie County School Board — and Lisa Kessler will face off in a Nov. 3 runoff election for the District 5 seat, according to unofficial results.
Neither Ingersoll nor Kessler received 50%-plus-one vote to win the Aug. 18 nonpartisan election outright, according to unofficial results from the Supervisor of Elections Office. Charles Cerami finished third in the race.

St. Lucie County School Board District 1 election results

Debbie Hawley is running for St. Lucie County School Board District 1.
Debbie Hawley was reelected to her St. Lucie County School Board District 1 seat against Brian Capp, according to unofficial results from the Supervisor of Elections Office.
Hawley received 54.81% of the vote, electing her to a fifth term.

Port St. Lucie mayor race heads to runoff

Steven Giordano is running for Port St. Lucie mayor.
Shannon Martin is running for Port St. Lucie Mayor.
Port St. Lucie Mayor Shannon Martin will face Steven Giordano in the Nov. 3 general election, as neither candidate received 50% plus one vote in the Aug. 18 primary election, according to the final but unofficial results.
Martin got 47.97% of the vote, besting Steven Giordano, who had 35.16%, and Eric Strazzeri, who had 16.87%. Steve Harrington filed to run, but did not qualify.
Martin first was elected to the City Council District 3 seat in 2010 and served as vice mayor from 2016-21.

Two head to runoff in Port St. Lucie District 1 race

Idony Jean Baptiste ran for Port St. Lucie City Council District 1 in 2026 and 2022.
Rick Meltzer is running for the Port St. Lucie District 1 seat in Nov. 3 General Election.
Rick Meltzer bested three candidates in the Port St. Lucie City Council District 1 seat in the Aug. 18 primary election, but did not earn enough votes to seal the election, according to unofficial results.
He received more votes than Eric Reikenis, Kevin Zimmerman and Indony Jean Baptiste. Meltzer received 42.1% of the vote and will face Baptiste, who garnered 22.1% of the vote, in the Nov. 3 general election.

Recount in race for Stuart Commission Group I seat

The race for the Group I seat on the Stuart City Commission is headed for an automatic recount, according to final, unofficial results from the Martin County Supervisor of Elections Office.
Incumbent Campbell Rich beat Will Laughlin by 0.49% of the vote. State law says any win by less than 0.5% goes to a recount. Laughlin is a member of the city’s Community Redevelopment Board, which advises the City Commission.

Norton sweeps Port St. Lucie District 3 race

Jim Norton is running for Port St. Lucie City Council District 3.
Jim Norton beat two candidates to win the Port St. Lucie City Council District 3 seat in the Aug. 18 primary election, according to unofficial results.
Norton bested challengers Peter Overhuls and Fritz Masson Alexandre.
The runoff winner will make $65,000 a year for the four-year term, and there are no term limits. They will represent the whole city, but must live in District 3, which includes the southwestern most part of the city.

Polls close on the Treasure Coast, Florida

Precinct particularly slow in Port St. Lucie

About 300 people have cast their ballots at the MidFlorida Credit Union Event Center in Port St. Lucie as of 4 p.m.
While Primary Elections typically attract fewer voters than general elections, this year is particularly slow, the precinct captain of 20 years said.
MidFlorida serves as the polling place for precincts 11 and 36. Election workers said some voters seeking to cast mail-in ballots have been showing up at the event center by mistake. Officials have been redirecting early voters to the neighboring department of motor vehicles building at 1664 SE Walton Rd, where they can turn in their ballots on the second floor.

Reneé Clark, 61, of Port St. Lucie cast her ballot with a particular interest in growth and economic opportunity.
“I’m looking to see how the future city administration will be able to handle the unprecedented growth that’s going to happen in this area,” she said.
Clark is an entrepreneur with an adult son who graduated from the after-school vocational nonprofit Project Lift, so attracting quality jobs to the area is a priority, she said.
“With the continuing influx of families, we need to attract higher paying jobs and encourage entrepreneurs,” she said.
Elections in Indiantown are pleasant

More than 200 people voted by 1:25 p.m. at the Elizabeth Lahti Library at 15200 East Thelma Waters Ave. in Indiantown, precinct captain Karen Carothers said. No one has had to wait, she said.
“It’s been a steady flow,” Carothers said. “Just very nice. Everybody’s been very pleasant.”

Several people voted for the first time and some people registered to vote, Carothers said. They will be able to vote in the next election, she said.
No issue brought Brian Greene, an Indiantown resident and U.S. Navy veteran, out to vote Aug. 18, he said.
“I’m a veteran,” he told TCPalm. “I always vote because it’s one of our few rights we have left. People have died to give you that right.”
More votes than expected in Stuart

At the Woman’s Club of Stuart polling place in the 700 block of Southeast Ocean Boulevard near downtown Stuart, Caitlynne Palmieri, polling place clerk, said about 370 voters had cast ballots as of about 1:15 p.m.
“It’s been steady and busy, busier than we thought it might be,” Palmieri said.
The 370 votes, she said, were “a little more than we anticipated.”
There were no issues encountered, with Palmieri describing things as “really smooth.”
At the Woman’s Club of Stuart polling place near downtown Stuart on Aug. 18, 2026, voter turnout by early afternoon was “steady and busy,” according to Caitlynne Palmieri, polling place clerk.
Outside the polling place, Nadia Pellett, 68, and her husband, Guy Pellett, 75, both of Stuart, expressed the importance of casting a ballot in person on election day.
“We always come in person,” Nadia Pellett said.
She said she watched her ballot go through the machine and knows her vote counted.
“Everybody ought to be required to vote on election day, period,” Guy Pellett said. “All this … about I can’t get an ID or I’m too old to get out and vote, you better be damn old in a wheelchair at home before you have to get an absentee ballot, in my opinion.”
Guy Pellett said Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were excited to vote.
“It was a privilege,” he said.
Long line moves quickly in Port St. Lucie

Voters poured into line between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. at Precinct 92 in Port St. Lucie at The Brennity at Tradition on primary election day.
Frank Johnson, the precinct captain, told TCPalm it was peak time for the area, but things seemed to be going well. The line was long and moving quickly, and voters were in and out in no time.

Tradition resident Pamela Estelle, 56, voted before she exited the building to thank sign-holders for her cheat sheet.
Thankful for the guidance, Estelle said that she believes politics have “gone off the rails.” She told TCPalm that paying attention to politics is like watching a Super Bowl game.
“It’s two competing teams, nobody works together to accomplish anything anymore,” Estelle said. “It is what it is, we don’t always like our bosses at work, but we still gotta work for them.”
Busy bursts of voters in Sebastian

At the North Indian River County library in Sebastian, about 260 voters had cast ballots as of noon.
“It’s been very steady,” said precinct chief Laurie Manning.
About eight people were in line when polls opened at 7 a.m. she said.
“We get bursts of people all of a sudden,” she said. “It’s been nice. It’s kept us all busy.”
Turnout at the library, where voters in precincts 4, 9 and 36 cast ballots, was higher than expected, Manning said.
“It’s been a very nice turnout so far,” Manning said.
About 260 voters had cast ballots as of noon Aug. 18 at the North Indian County Library.
Voters said the process was quick and easy.
Sebastian resident Shawn Beauchemin, 48, said his biggest concern was the governor’s race.
“I just love the free state of Florida, and I want to keep it that way,” said Beauchemin, adding he was hoping to see less development.
Voting took just minutes, he said.
“It was good,” he said. “It went well.”
Ron Gehrke, 69, of Vero Lake Estates, also said voting was “simple and fast.”
He said he always votes.
“I like to have my opinion registered,” Gehrke said.
Voters excited to cast ballots in Gifford

Elaine Zehren, 65, cast her ballot at the Gifford Community Center, stepped outside and pumped her fists.
“Go Democrats!” she exclaimed.
“It’s an honor to be able to vote in Florida and change the state to blue,” she said. “Big blue wave is coming.”
Roughly 60 citizens cast their ballot by 11 a.m., elections officials said. That number is expected to shoot up during the lunch hour rush.
Zehren received voter information from Democrats of Indian River, which was operating a stand pitched nearby the precinct.
One of the volunteers at the booth was Jordyn Balderas, who is running as a Democrat for the state house District 34. Balderas will be on the November ballot, since he has no challenger in the Democratic primary.
“So far, four people have talked to us about who to vote for,” Balderas said. “I plan to vote later.”

Tom Conte, 77, spent the morning trying to cast his vote, he said. He tried voting where he cast his ballot in a previous election, he said, but election officials sent him elsewhere. He bounced around various precincts in the county trying to find the right one. Election officials at Gifford told him his correct voting precinct was, all along, down the street from where he lived, which he found amusing. He laughed as he told the story.
Conte unfolded a sample ballot from his pocket. He planned to vote for Bob McPartlan, a Republican candidate for the Indian River County Commission, he said.
“Although, I like the name ‘Brooks Robinson’,” he said, referring to a Major League Baseball player who shared a similar name to the candidate Daniel Brooks Robinson. “I’m a baseball guy. That caught my eye. I almost wanted to vote for (him).”
No voting- or elections-related issues

Polls have opened across the Treasure Coast, including the polling location at the Days Inn in Fort Pierce, for primary election day on Aug. 18, 2026.
Sheriff’s officials from Martin, St. County and Indian River counties didn’t have any issues or incidents related to elections or voting to report.
Sherrie Williams, voter registration administrator for the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Office, agreed.
“Everything seems to be going fine,” Williams said. “We haven’t had any major issues — no issues period.”
Voter turnout in St. Lucie County was nearly 17% by 11:30 a.m., she said.
“Turnout is pretty good — a little slow,” Williams said.
She expected the biggest bulk of voting to come after 5 p.m. like it typically does after people get off work and vote before polls close at 7 p.m.
In 2022, the last non-presidential election year, primary election day turnout in St. Lucie County was 23%.
“We’re on track to be the same for this election,” Williams said.
Steady stream of voters in Jensen Beach

A steady stream of voters poured into the Langford Park precinct at 2369 N.E. Dixie Highway in Jensen Beach just after 10 a.m. Aug. 18. There had been no issues or wait times for voters so far, the precinct captain told TCPalm.
Patricia Lightbourn, 74, of Jensen Beach, said she has voted in every election since she was 18 years old.
“It’s just something you do,” Lightbourn said. “It’s your civic duty.”
Bryan Yates, 58, of Jensen Beach, said he had no issues while voting.
“I came out today because my issues are important to me,” Yates said.

Light voter turnout in Stuart

By 10 a.m., voter turnout was light on primary election day at Blake Library precinct on Monterey Road in Stuart, said Erica Jacobs Clemon, precinct captain. People were coming in dribs and drabs.
There had been no issues with equipment or with people’s identification or where they were supposed to be voting, she told TCPalm. She expected voting to pick up throughout the day.
Voting was seamless after walking out of the precinct before 9 a.m., said Stuart resident Chris Diserio, 58, calling his experience “easy breezy.” Diserio didn’t cite one issue or candidate that made him come out to vote.
“I like to vote. It’s a privilege,” Diserio said. “They had it well organized.”
Primary day voting starts in Fort Pierce

At least 18 people had voted by 8 a.m. Aug. 18 at Precinct 25, the polling location at the Days Inn on U.S. 1 in Fort Pierce.
Marvin Ingram, who has been the poll worker in charge of the precinct for the past 17 years, said primary election day was running smoothly so far.
There was a line out the door of people ready to vote when polls opened at 7 a.m., Ingram said. A lot of people grabbed breakfast next door or stopped by before they went to work.
“We got off to a good start,” Ingram said. “We know everybody.”
