The progressive Florida state representative heads to the general election against Republican incumbent Ashley Moody.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a stunning upset, Florida State Rep. Angie Nixon has been declared the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate by the Associated Press, defeating former Trump Administration whistleblower Alex Vindman in the 2026 Florida primary election.
Nixon, who hails from Jacksonville’s Moncrief neighborhood, was a double-digit underdog in the Democratic primary.

She often criticized Vindman, who was fired by the Trump Administration after testifying in Trump’s first impeachment hearing in 2019, on his pro-Israel foreign policy stance and overall moderate platform.
Nixon is running on a platform in favor of passing Medicare for All, expanding childcare and fighting for working families.
According to her campaign website, she’s running because “too many families are working harder than ever and still falling behind—while corrupt billionaires and greedy corporations rig the system in their favor.”
She heads to the general election to face Republican incumbent Ashley Moody, who’s heavily favored in the race to retain her seat.
Nixon is set for trial the week of Sept. 21 after her arrest in May during a sit-in at Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office at the Capitol.
The arrest came on May 15 after Nixon spent several hours inside the governor’s office protesting newly drawn congressional maps approved by Florida lawmakers.
Nixon said the protest was about fair representation and protecting the right to vote.
