MIAMI (WSVN) – Two local schools were among dozens in Miami-Dade County that received much-needed school supplies thanks to the Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation.
The organization teamed up with the Miami Marlins Foundation to hand out essential supplies at Mater Kiwanis and Riverside Elementary on Wednesday.
The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana Foundation is distributing the items to more than 8,000 students. Officials filled backpacks with notebooks, pencils, rulers and other essentials, benefitting many students as the school year gets underway.
The organization is known for two fun annual events — Carnaval on the Mile and Calle Ocho Music Festival — but these are just fundraisers to help children in the community.
“We’ve been doing it for many, many years, and for me particularly, it’s a blessing, because I get a chance to give to others that are less fortunate,” said Jorge Fernandez, Chairman of the Kiwanis of Little Havana.
The Kiwanis Club will continue to distribute supplies throughout the next two weeks.
