ORLANDO, Fla. — SunRail has resumed full operations at 17 train stations Thursday after signal outages forced them to temporarily stop coverage from AdventHealth to Poinciana earlier in the day.
However, riders taking the train between AdventHealth and Poinciana should expect delays because operating systems may take several hours to restore scheduled service in that area, according to the Florida Department of Transportation and SunRail.
Bridge bus service will continue to supplement the trains between AdventHealth and Poinciana stations as long as needed Thursday evening. The buses will stop at each station.
Some passengers said they appreciated having another option during the disruption.
“I think it’s really kind of them to give people another option instead of leaving people stranded,” SunRail rider Alyssa Meyer said.
Other riders had to find their own alternatives. Luana Velazquez said she and two other passengers split an Uber after waiting for more than two hours.
“Two other strangers and myself got in an Uber, we split it and we go here,” Velazquez said. “So I think we’ve been waiting for two and a half hours.”
Velazquez said she uses SunRail twice a week and plans to continue riding despite the delay.
“I do love the SunRail, it’s cheap and efficient,” she said.
Normal service is expected to be fully restored to its regular schedule by Friday morning.
Service between the DeLand and Winter Park stations operated on a normal schedule all day.
Earlier in the day, service had been temporarily stopped between Poinciana and Winter Park.
FDOT cited signal outages as the reason for the service suspension earlier Thursday.
The signal outages occurred when construction workers near Highland Avenue in Orlando cut a fiberoptic line at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, killing the signal between the stations, an FDOT spokesperson said.
Signals have been restored, and trains are back in operation.
Riders can expect delays while the system returns to scheduled service. Buses will continue between AdventHealth and Poinciana as needed this evening.
