Dan Green wins Republican primary for Florida’s newly redrawn District 9, AP calls

KISSIMMEE, Fla. —

Dan Green is projected to win the Republican Party nomination in the race for Florida’s newly redrawn 9th Congressional District, the Associated Press has called.

Green — who bills himself as a proven leader “who will stand with President Trump to safeguard our constitutional government and protect our American way of life” — will face incumbent Democrat Darren Soto, who ran unopposed, in November.

Congressional redistricting

The new congressional boundaries that Republicans enacted in May essentially eliminate four congressional districts currently or most recently represented by Democrats.

District 9 was redrawn by Republicans ahead of the 2026 elections during a two-day special legislative session, visibly almost doubling in size in a way believed by opponents to have violated a state constitutional prohibition on partisan gerrymandering.

In an interview with WESH 2 News, Soto told reporter Greg Fox that “Central Florida gets torn apart” by the new map.

Where, as of the 2024 map, the district covered Osceola County and some of southern Orange County — mostly south of State Road 528, as well as Orlando International Airport up to Pine Castle, Conway, and areas surrounding — the 2026 map stretches around 60 miles farther south, nearly reaching Clewiston on the shore of Lake Okeechobee, and something like 30 miles east to cover Vero Beach on the Atlantic coast.

House districts used in Florida’s 2024 elections resulted in 20 Republicans and eight Democrats. New districts passed by the Republican-led Florida Legislature would give Republicans a better chance at winning several additional seats. The 2024 boundaries show party control from the last election; the new boundaries show the partisan makeup that Republicans hoped to achieve in the 2026 election.

After voters sued, arguing that the state should continue using the same districts as in the previous election, Florida’s Supreme Court has since denied their request for a temporary injunction without ruling on the merits of the case, with justices stating they lacked jurisdiction to intervene while the lawsuit plays out in the lower courts.

November general election

The 2026 Florida elections will be held in Florida on Nov. 3, 2026, alongside the nationwide midterm elections.
