A red C6 Corvette turned a Friday night patrol into a front row view of a street race, blasting off at 120 mph on the Buckman Bridge in Jacksonville, Florida — all while an unmarked Jacksonville sheriff’s vehicle was directly behind it.
Officer Ernesto Valerio was watching traffic when a Dodge Challenger pulled alongside the Corvette, the two cars slowing enough to clog lanes. In bodycam video released Tuesday, Valerio can be heard reacting as the Corvette driver sticks an arm out the window and gives a countdown signal.
“Look at these guys blocking everything,” Valerio says — seconds before the Corvette and Challenger launch into a full-blown race. “Oh, and they’re racing now. Right in front of me.”
The Corvette jumps ahead immediately, leaving the Challenger struggling to keep pace as both cars hit triple digit speeds. Valerio floors it after them, eventually catching only the Challenger, which appeared to lose the race.
The driver, 22-year-old Quashay Frazier Jr., was arrested on charges of racing and super speeding. The Corvette driver, who initiated the race with the hand signal, was apparently not caught.
JSO said the arrest was one of eight made Friday and Saturday during “Operation Double Down,” a crackdown targeting street racers and super speeders. The agency emphasized the danger of high-speed stunts on public roads.
“Driving this recklessly puts lives at risk. Plain and simple,” JSO said in its social media post. The department noted Jacksonville has already lost more than 100 people on its roads this year, with speed and impairment among the top factors.
Valerio’s video ends with him ordering Frazier out of the Challenger at gunpoint.
“Shut the vehicle off, now! If you don’t understand this, let me tell you right now, you’re under arrest for racing and super speeding,” he tells the driver.
The Corvette — the car that started it all — sped off into the night, apparently escaping the stop but not the camera that captured the moment it triggered the race.
