New Express Lanes on the Howard Frankland Bridge will open Saturday on Interstate 275, requiring drivers to have a SunPass for electronic tolling. Florida Department of Transportation officials announced the lanes will begin operation as drivers cross Old Tampa Bay between Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
These electronic toll lanes aim to improve travel between the two counties. Passenger cars can use them. So can registered van pools and buses.
According to Fox 13 News, the speed limit across the bridge sits at 65 mph, but FDOT warns that drivers must stay alert. Speed limits drop to 55 mph on both sides because construction zones remain active there.
Drivers will need a SunPass transponder to use the new lanes starting Saturday. The tolling system operates electronically. Cash payments aren’t accepted on the express portion.
The opening marks a major step in the Howard Frankland Bridge project on I-275, which aims to reduce congestion for commuters traveling between Tampa and St. Petersburg.
Only certain vehicle types can access the new lanes — passenger cars, registered van pools, and buses get approval, while other truck classifications and motorcycles face restrictions.
The express option gives drivers a choice. Traditional lanes remain available for those without a SunPass or who prefer not to pay the toll.
FDOT has posted signs alerting motorists to the Saturday start date and urges drivers to get a SunPass in advance if they plan to use the express option.
The project represents part of ongoing work to modernize the I-275 corridor, and officials have worked to complete this phase while maintaining traffic flow across the bay.
