The sheriff said initial reports indicated Deputy Arthur Alfaro was found guilty of trying to flee deputies at a high rate of speed in Sebastian. However, Del Toro said no criminal charges were filed related to that allegation.

Alfaro was found guilty on the DUI charge, the sheriff said.

Now that the criminal case has been resolved, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office will begin its Internal Affairs investigation. The sheriff said that process is separate from the criminal case.

Alfaro remains on unpaid administrative leave while the investigation moves forward.
