A Boca Raton man was arrested Thursday night in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Broward County that killed a man days earlier, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
Just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a 39-year-old man was crossing the intersection of Northeast 49th Street and North Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point on a stand-up scooter when he was hit by a grey Toyota Corolla driving south, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The driver, identified as Gustavo Mendez, 39, left the area after the crash, the news release said.
Lighthouse Point Fire Rescue took the man, whose name has not been released, to Broward Health North, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Both Mendez and the car were later found in Boca Raton. BSO Traffic Homicide Unit detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Mendez, and Lighthouse Point Police arrested him Thursday night, the Sheriff’s Office said.
As of Friday, he was being held in the Broward Main Jail and faces one count of failure to stop or remain at the scene of an accident involving death.
Court records were not available Friday.
