TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A machine recount is underway to determine who will face P.J. Perez in November for Tallahassee City Commission Seat 3.
The Leon County Canvassing Board met Saturday as Tom Derzypolski and Talethia Edwards remained separated by just 14 votes for second place in the primary.
Leon County Supervisor of Elections Mark Earley said recounts are standard procedure when races are close.
“Recounts are not uncommon. We do them a lot, but it’s a meticulous process. Elections are most fragile when the results are very close, so we have a very clear, strict chain of custody we have to maintain,” Earley said.

Election workers reran all ballots containing the Seat 3 race through the tabulation system.
If the machine recount continues to show a close margin, a manual recount could follow. Second unofficial results are expected by 3 p.m. Sunday.
Edwards told WCTV she is “holding both hope and uncertainty, but remaining faithful, clear of her calling, steady and focused.”
Derzypolski’s campaign manager said the process has been nerve-racking but that he is excited about what’s possible.
