The New York Giants and Miami Dolphins meet on Saturday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium in a preseason game that arrives with an unusually physical backdrop. Just two days earlier, the clubs held a joint practice in Miami Gardens that featured multiple scrums and several punches thrown as tempers flared under the South Florida heat.
Both sides are expected to rest a significant number of starters after the competitive session. Giants coach John Harbaugh indicated following Thursday’s workout that the coaching staff would evaluate how much game action certain players needed, noting that some already received enough quality work against the Dolphins.
The result is a contest that should provide extended opportunities for backups and younger players to make an impression while the regulars get valuable recovery time ahead of the final preseason week.
The Giants again wasted a good offensive drive as checkdowns slowed things down, leading to a 37-yard Ben Sauls field goal to cap off a 16-play, 64-yard drive.

While the kickers need the work, head coach John Harbaugh is not going to be happy with quarterback Brandon Allen and his decision-making, especially in Miami territory.

Injury alert: OL Joshua Ezeudu
With just over 2:00 remaining in the third quarter, reserve offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu went down and struggled to get to his feet. When he eventually did, he limped off to the sideline with the help of trainers. He appeared to grab his left calf.
Replacing Jameis Winston, veteran Brandon Allen has come in to start the second half and although his box score stats look solid, his passive play has frustrated his teammates and coaches. Perhaps gunshy after an interception last week, Allen has been a check-down artist to the detriment of the offense.
A promising 10-play, 38-yard drive (that sure says it, doesn’t it?) ends with a 27-yard Ben Sauls field goal.
Giants 23, Dolphins 3
The Giants and Dolphins have traded punts to start the second half, with the most notable play being a goal-line tackle by linebacker Zaire Barnes, who is in a fierce battle for a roster spot.
Meanwhile, a Micah McFadden special teams penalty cost the Giants good field position.

An Odell Beckham Jr. drop in the endzone was crushing for the receiver and his fans despite an otherwise solid drive. Ultimately, the Giants were forced to settle for a 32-yard Dominic Zvada field goal, capping off a 10-play, 54-yard drive.
The Giants will receive the second-half kickoff.
With just 1:12 remaining in the first half, the Dolphins finally put points on the board with a 53-yard Riley Patterson field goal, capping off a seven-play, 28-yard drive.
Giants 17, Dolphins 3
The Giants offense had a methodical drive midway through the second quarter, complete with a good run-pass mix. Odell Beckham Jr. caught a 12-yard pass to set Big Blue up deep in Miami territory before Devin Singletary capped off a nine-play, 71-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run.
Giants 17, Dolphins 0
After the Giants offense stalled following a short Miami punt, rookie kicker Dominic Zvada connected on his first preseason attempt (43 yards), capping off a four-play, five-yard drive.
Giants 10, Dolphins 0
A week after missing an assignment and allowing Jaxson Dart to take a brutal shot, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. fumbled (untouched) inside Miami’s 10-yard line, costing the Giants a potential score.
After an ugly pass interference penalty, cornerback Dru Phillips bounced back with a nice tackle on a screen and then forced a third-down fumble that was recovered by linebacker Micah McFadden.
Despite earlier reports that offensive coordinator Matt Nagy would call plays from the sideline, he started the game up in the booth.
After the defense forced a three-and-out, which included passes defensed by Greg Newsome and Tyler Nubin, the offense took the ball and charged down the field. They had multiple plays of 10-plus yards, including a 28-yard catch-and-run by Darius Slayton and a 21-yard end-around from Calvin Austin.
Facing a third-and-5, Jameis Winston went through his progressions and had no one open, so he took off for a diving 11-yard score.
