The Rotary Club of Key Biscayne will hold a cocktail reception from 5:30-8:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the Key Biscayne Yacht Club to celebrate community service, install its new Board of Directors and award grants to local nonprofits and scholarships to students.
Past Rotary District 6990 Governor Barbara Gobbi will swear in the club’s incoming board.
The event will also recognize 11 local organizations receiving grants: A Zero Waste Culture, Act 4 Me, Bridge to Hope, Fill A Bag, Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center, Miami Children’s Chorus, Save Our Sisters, South Florida Bird Observatory, Theatre Works, Touching Miami With Love and Youth Lead Change.
Four students will receive scholarships: Teresa Martin de Santa Olalla, Florencio J. Munoz-Legarre, William Lubimov and Parker Zuccarini.
Last year, the club distributed more than $23,000 in grants and scholarships to organizations and students making a difference in the Key Biscayne community and beyond. This year, the club’s selection committee, chaired by Pam Gordon, will be awarding $30,000.
Gordon said her team, which included Patricia Amat-Leon, Steve Baker, Inés Lozano, Ines Sequira and Pilar Silverman, was thrilled by the number of deserving applicants and wished they could fund them all. Gordon thanked the applicants for their time and noted the students’ qualifications were impressive.
The funding for the grants comes from the Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation’s fundraising work throughout the year, including the recent Fourth of July Liberty Grill BBQ.
