Car catches fire after Amtrak train collision in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CBS12) — A car burst into flames after being struck by an Amtrak train Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale, per officials.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue told CBS Miami that the crash happened at 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Northwest 9th Ave. and West Prospect Road. The department responded to the fire after multiple 911 calls reported the incident.

Crews from Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park fire rescue arrived to find the vehicle burning next to the stopped Amtrak train. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames before boarding the train to check on passengers and crew.

No one inside the vehicle was injured, according to FLFR. No injuries had been confirmed among the train’s passengers or crew, though firefighters were evaluating two people at the scene.

The cause of the crash has not been released. The investigation remains ongoing.
