Student housing delays continue, displaced students move into hotels

  • August 23, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – As college students move in this weekend, the student housing apartment “Perla” still isn’t ready.

Students say they were first told they could move in Friday, August 21st. But Thursday night, they learned move-in was pushed back to next Friday, August 28th.

WCTV went out Sunday to see the latest on construction, and workers were still busy on the sidewalks out front. Machinery and boxes were also still visible inside and outside the building.

WCTV also spoke with students who say they’ve now been moved into nearby hotels, including Hotel Indigo, as they wait for their apartments to be ready.

Students tell us “Perla” is offering a rent credit on a per-day basis at 200%. That means for every day they don’t have the keys to their unit, they’ll receive a credit on their account.

More Tallahassee news:

They’re also getting a $50 per diem for food, a $20 Uber gift card, and, if storage is needed, “Perla” will cover one month, up to $100.

Students say they know of at least hundreds of people displaced at Hotel Indigo alone, not including students staying at other hotels.

Sarah Bolja, a junior at FSU who has been displaced, says she’s thankful for the help being offered.

“I’m pretty thankful that they are, in fact, providing all of this stuff for us. I mean, we have all the amenities kind of necessary for us to be able to start our school year and then finally be able to get to move in normally. I feel like they are being pretty generous with all of these changes so quickly, and I know it has to be a gigantic stress on them.”

We have reached out to Hedrick Brothers Construction about the delays.

In a statement Friday, they shared they are working to finalize the certificate of occupancy and the inspection process ahead of fall semester move-in.
