MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A homicide investigation is now underway in connection to the weekend death of an Alabama State University student, Montgomery police are confirming.
A suspect is in custody.
MPD units responded to the 1600 block of Interstate Park Drive shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday where they found an unresponsive woman who was ultimately pronounced deceased.
The scene is the location of an off-campus ASU facility.
The victim was identified by police and ASU administrators as 20-year-old Ava Walters.
MPD said Walters is a Montgomery resident while ASU President Quinton Ross Jr., said she was a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native who was a second-year Health Information Management major at ASU.

A suspect, Jalil Bivens, 22, also of Fort Lauderdale, is now being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility on a murder charge.
Court documents state Bivens and Walters were dating, and, based on a statement provided by Bivens, authorities determined that he strangled Walters to death.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Walters is Montgomery’s 34th homicide victim of 2026.
