NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – A 73-year-old driver was arrested after police said he nearly struck an officer with his car while fleeing a traffic stop in Miami.
According to an arrest report, officers were working an off-duty traffic detail at Vous Church, located at the iTech at Thomas A. Edison Educational Center along Northwest Second Avenue, late Aug.23.
Police said Marcos Tulio Escobar was driving a white 2020 Toyota southbound on Northwest Second Avenue at an excessive speed as pedestrians were crossing near Northwest 61st Street.
Officers, who were wearing traffic vests, signaled for Escobar to slow down, investigators said.
According to the report, Escobar stopped and told officers that he would not slow down because he only listened to traffic lights and not law enforcement.
Officers told Escobar that he was being stopped and was not free to leave.
Investigators said Escobar then accelerated while an officer was standing in front of his vehicle, nearly striking him. The officer was able to move out of the way to avoid being hit.
Police said Escobar continued driving before his vehicle came to a stop near Northwest 53rd Street and Second Avenue.
Officers took Escobar into custody, but investigators said he resisted by brushing an officer’s hands away.
Neither Escobar nor the officer was injured.
Escobar appeared in bond court Monday, where a judge found probable cause and set his bond at $5,500.
Escobar faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding a police officer, resisting an officer without violence, failure to obey a police officer or firefighter and refusal to sign and accept a summons.
