Authorities have arrested a man and charged him with murder after the death of an Alabama State University (ASU) student at an off-campus location over the weekend.
The school announced the death of Ava Walters, a second-year Health Information Management major from Fort Lauderdale, on Sunday.
“On behalf of Alabama State University Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, and students, I extend my deepest condolences to Ms. Walter’s family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her,” said ASU president Dr. Quinton Ross, Jr. “There are no words that can truly ease the pain of losing a loved one, but please know that the entire Hornet Nation stands with you during this difficult time.”
Police stated the death, which reportedly occurred on Sunday morning, was being investigated as a homicide by the Montgomery Police Department (MPD).
MPD did not immediately respond to inquiries from 1819 News. However, the same day as the murder, Jalil Bivens, 22, also of Fort Lauderdale, was arrested and placed into the Montgomery County Detention Facility on one charge of murder. He is being held without bail.
