MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Court documents are revealing more details surrounding the death of an Alabama State University Student, who authorities now say was murdered.
MPD units responded to the 1600 block of Interstate Park Drive, an off-campus ASU facility, shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday where they found an unresponsive woman who was ultimately pronounced deceased.
The victim was identified by police and ASU administrators as 20-year-old Ava Walters, of Fort Lauderdale.
Jalil Bivens, 22, also of Fort Lauderdale, is now being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility on a murder charge.
Court documents state Bivens and Walters were dating, and, based on a statement provided by Bivens, authorities determined that he strangled her to death.
ASU President Quinton Ross Jr., said Walters was a second-year Health Information Management major.

The investigation remains ongoing.
Walters is Montgomery’s 34th homicide victim of 2026.
