ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County School Board members are set to meet at a work session Tuesday to discuss the district’s search for a new superintendent.

This comes nearly one month after Superintendent Dr. Maria Vazquez announced her retirement. Vazquez, who has worked for Orange County Public Schools for more than 30 years, announced that she will retire from the district when the current school year ends.

Tuesday’s meeting is expected to focus on how the district will conduct the search, what the process will look like, and how quickly it will begin, according to School Board members.

Angie Gallo, who is taking over as School Board chair, said she is looking for a candidate with an innovative business mindset who can create school environments students want to be in.

“Kids don’t want to be in school six and a half hours a day anymore. That’s just not who they are,” Gallo said. “We have to meet them where they’re to bring them back. So, it’s really going to need to be someone who’s innovative.”

Gallo said the next superintendent also needs to understand the education system, the needs of teachers and staff, and the challenges facing schools locally and statewide. OCPS has faced numerous challenges recently — including continually decreasing enrollment numbers, and the budget issues and school closures they have caused.

“They don’t have to be from Florida, but they need to understand the unique dynamics that is happening in Florida right now, definitely,” Gallo said of the next superintendent. “And understands what’s going on in Orange County, because we did close seven schools. We still have a number of schools that are under-enrolled. We’re trying to get that enrollment up through different programs and different opportunities, but it has to be someone who can help us continue to move that needle forward and bring back students that have left Orange County Public Schools.”

Gallo also said Vazquez’s retirement is bittersweet, but after decades with the district, she is excited for Vazquez’s next chapter.

“I am excited for that next part of her adventure in life,” she said.
