Seventy percent chance of development for tropical wave in the Atlantic; two areas to watch
An area of interest near Africa now has high odds to develop over the next two days.
FORT MYERS, Fla. —
The Gulf Coast Hurricane Tracking Team is monitoring two invest areas for potential tropical development.
The term “invest” is short for area of investigation. The designation triggers more data collection but doesn’t guarantee tropical development.
Invest 96L in the Eastern Atlantic:
Chances for development are increasing for a tropical wave near the west coast of Africa. According to the National Hurricane Center, development odds within the next 2 days are at 70 percent. The development chances are high at 70 percent over the next 7 days.
The disturbance is tracking west at 15 to 20 mph. It will continue moving west through the warm waters of the Atlantic. A tropical depression is likely to form as the disturbance enters the central tropical Atlantic.
Invest 95L in the Western Atlantic:
A weak area of low pressure a few hundred miles east-northeast of Bermuda has been dubbed Invest 95L. Designating a disturbance as an invest doesn’t guarantee tropical development, though the classification triggers more data collection. The latest odds for development are sitting at 40 percent over the next two and seven days.
The disturbance could become a short-lived tropical depression or storm later today. Late Tuesday or early Wednesday, this area will move toward cooler sea surface temperatures, ending the window for tropical development. Regardless of development, this area poses no threat to Florida.
If a named storm were to form, the next name on this year’s list is Dolly.
