This week on The Big Gay Radio Show, Chris Gorman, Esmé Russell, and Vyn Suazion welcomed Jessica Salmond, Communications and Marketing Director for Friends of Strays Animal Shelter, to discuss Gov. Ron DeSantis’ veto of $2 million in funding for the organization’s planned expansion.
Salmond discussed the impact of losing the state funding, the role Friends of Strays plays in the Tampa Bay community, and the organization’s work as a no-kill animal shelter. She also explained what no-kill shelters are and how members of the community can support Friends of Strays as the organization continues its mission.
The team then turned to several LGBTQIA+ and national headlines. They discussed Pete Hegseth’s use of a transphobic slur during a speech about the U.S. military and the Log Cabin Republicans removing transgender rights from the organization’s mission.
Other topics included Enes Kanter Freedom’s eligibility to play in the WNBA, President Donald Trump potentially changing the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” and Polk County authorities citing 94 drivers for illegally passing school buses in a single day.
The group also remembered Tampa Bay entertainer Russell Mania Infiniti, whose death was recently announced, before covering more news and issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community throughout Tampa Bay.
Chris Gorman, Esmé Russell, and Vyn Suazion continued their conversation with Jessica Salmond on The Big Gay After Show before diving into another round of the week’s hottest topics.
The group discussed sex toys thrown onto the court during WNBA games, changes involving the Howard Frankland Bridge, the arrest of the San Francisco 49ers owner in Ohio, and comments from Buc-ee’s CEO about the travel-center chain preferring to expand in “conservative, business-friendly” states.
The conversation also turned to research involving so-called “poop pills” as a potential long-term treatment for nut allergies and the use of electric shock gloves in schools.
Further, the team discussed Chris’ adventures at Sawmill Campground, developments involving Alex Jones’ lawsuit, the Sarasota School Board flipping to a liberal majority, and the arrest of a Sarasota police officer following allegations that he misused Flock camera data.
