WINTER PARK, Fla. — Winter Park city commissioners are scheduled to discuss a proposed project that would replace El Cortez apartments with townhomes and a synagogue.
If approved, the project would allow Chabad of Greater Orlando to relocate to the apartment site on East Morse Boulevard. El Cortez currently includes 35 apartment units and nearly 20 parking spaces.
The proposal would replace the existing apartment complex with five townhome units and a three-story synagogue that would also include a daycare.
Planning and Zoning approved the project and is forwarding its recommendations to the City Commission for discussion.
According to the staff report, the project is intended to provide residential and community uses within walking distance of downtown Winter Park.
Documents attached to the meeting agenda include multiple letters, emails, and petitions in favor and in opposition to the project. Residents have raised concerns, including traffic, although a city traffic study said the project is not expected to affect current conditions.
Those in favor believe this will be a great addition to the local Jewish community and enrich heritage in the area.
The city appears to be setting aside two hours during the meeting for public comment, which could be time-limited depending on the number of speakers.
The meeting begins at 3:30 p.m. at Winter Park City Hall.
