A Miami man was arrested Monday for allegedly trying to steal more than $8,600 from the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Luis Albert Alonso, 33, illegally altered a check.
“Alonso stole a dividend check from FKEC intended for one of his relatives, altered the check, and made two mobile deposits using that altered check into his personal bank account totaling approximately $8,648,” MCSO alleges. “The FKEC and banks involved noticed discrepancies and notified the Sheriff’s Office. Detectives were able to collect evidence in the case with help from the banks and FKEC.”
Alonso is charged with organized fraud, possession of personal identifying information with intent to defraud, grand theft, depositing a bank item with intent to defraud, and using a two-way communication device to commit a felony, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
