Three Miami, Oklahoma, police officers involved in a double-fatal June shooting on I-44 have been cleared.
District Attorney Doug Pewitt determined the officers’ actions were justified based on an investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The officers have returned to duty.
Jason Moore, 45, of Columbia, Missouri, and Lexi Scheets, 35, of Willard, Missouri, were killed June 16 near the Miami Welcome Center.
Investigators have not determined who fired the shot or shots that killed Scheets.
The OSBI says that portion of the investigation remains open.
Moore was driving a stolen Jeep when he picked up Scheets at a local casino.
A Quapaw Nation Marshal Service officer later attempted a traffic stop.
The marshal was under the impression that Scheets was being held hostage and said Moore fired at him during the pursuit.
Authorities said Moore and Scheets eventually stopped, got out of the Jeep, and ran across the interstate before gunfire was exchanged.
