WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — South Florida’s wet and unsettled weather pattern will continue today, with scattered to numerous thunderstorms developing during the afternoon and a few storms potentially becoming strong.
Storms are expected to first develop near the east coast as the Atlantic sea breeze moves inland. Activity will then spread toward the interior through the late afternoon and early evening, where the greatest concentration of thunderstorms is expected.

The atmosphere contains plenty of moisture and energy for storm development. A few of the stronger thunderstorms could produce wind gusts between 40 and 55 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and small hail.
Heavy rainfall will also be a concern. Most areas that receive storms could pick up 1 to 2 inches of rain, while isolated locations across the interior could receive 3 to 4 inches. Localized flooding will be possible where torrential rain falls over low-lying or poor-drainage areas.

Outside of thunderstorms, temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s. Humidity will push heat index values into the low 100s, though increasing clouds and afternoon storms should provide some relief. If thunderstorms develop later than expected, a few locations could briefly experience heat index values of 105 degrees or higher and a Heat Advisory may be needed.

Friday brings another active afternoon, with scattered to numerous thunderstorms developing as deep moisture remains in place. Gusty winds, frequent lightning and heavy downpours will remain the primary hazards heading into the weekend.
