Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Deputy Devin Jaramollo was shot and killed Friday afternoon during a traffic stop near Kendall, the sheriff’s office confirmed. According to Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, Deputy Jaramillo responded to a traffic crash when he was “brutally attacked and murdered.”
CBS News Miami reported that a struggle broke out between Jaramillo and at least one person at the scene before the deputy was shot. The suspect reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and a second person was being questioned.
Cordero-Stutz said Good Samaritans called 911 and deputies provided first aid before Jaramillo was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. “What happened to our deputy was not OK,” she said. “We will still continue to make this county safe.”
Hundreds of officers from across South Florida gathered outside the hospital in support. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue raised an American flag as a motorcade escorted Jaramillo’s body to the medical examiner’s office.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava wrote, “Our entire community stands with this brave officer, his family and fellow deputies, and all our men and women in uniform who put themselves at risk to protect our community.”
Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones said, “Regardless of the color of our uniforms, there are no jurisdictional boundaries when one of our own is in need—or when one of our own has fallen. We all mourn together.”
Who Was Devin Jaramillo?
Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, joined the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office in May 2024 after graduating from the academy. Before that, he served nearly four years with the Coral Gables Police Department.
