TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The state of Florida presented its case against Billy Adams on Wednesday.
“He wanted to eliminate a child he believed was his, a side piece girlfriend who he didn’t want around,” said a prosecuting attorney.

Adams is accused of shooting and killing his then pregnant girlfriend, Alana Sims, in January 2023. Her unborn child also died. The state said Adams told officers he was with friends the night Sims was killed and showed them a video in an effort to prove it.
“What did the detectives find out? That the video that showed a date and a time stamp of January 30 at 8 p.m. had in fact been recorded two days later on February 1 at 11:04 a.m.,” said a prosecuting attorney.
The state said after confronting him with more information, Adams confessed to shooting Sims in self-defense. But they added that he told two different stories when reenacting what happened during an interview with detectives.
“On his first reenactment, the detectives go, ‘It didn’t happen like that. You two weren’t wrestling over a gun, and it’s turned around and pointed at her, we know that didn’t happen.’ He says, ‘OK, so then here’s what happened, I disarmed her, I took two steps back, and then I shot her’,” said a prosecuting attorney.
Meanwhile, the defense examined a Tampa Police Department homicide detective about the suspect’s vehicle the night of the crime and also challenged the jury.
“If the state’s proof leaves you with a reasonable doubt about any element, then your job is clear. Mr. Adams is not guilty,” a defense attorney said.
A handful of witnesses were called to the stand Wednesday, which included law enforcement and medical professionals. They said they plan to call 24 witnesses in total.
