Dengue fever
The Florida Department of Health reports an additional 18 locally transmitted dengue fever cases during the week ending August 22- 15 in Hillsborough County and three in Miami-Dade County.
This brings the total locally acquired dengue cases reported in Florida from January 1 to August 22 to 41.
Hillsborough County, where Tampa is located, doubled to 30 cases, followed by Miami-Dade County with 7, 3 in Pinellas County and one in Palm Beach.
In addition, on Monday this week, the Florida Department of Health in Citrus County, on Florida’s West coast north of Tampa, reported their first local dengue case.
The vast majority of cases, 38, typed as Dengue virus 2 by PCR.

In addition, 23 additional travel associated dengue cases were reported last week, bringing the total this year so far to 109 cases.
Counties reporting cases were: Bay, Brevard (2), Broward (12), Duval, Hillsborough (6), Lake, Lee (5), Manatee, MiamiDade (60), Monroe, Orange (2), Osceola, Palm Beach (6), Pinellas, Polk (2), Sarasota, Seminole, St. Johns, St. Lucie (3), and Walton. Two cases were reported in non-Florida residents.
About 3/4s of the travel associated cases were linked to Cuba.
West Nile virus
Last Friday, the Florida Department of Health in Walton County confirmed a human case of locally-acquired West Nile virus (WNV).
DOH-Walton and South Walton Mosquito Control are coordinating surveillance and prevention efforts by ground treating, spraying the areas, and emptying any standing water in the area.
This is the second human WNV reported in the state, with a case reported in Alachua County earlier this year.
