A Miami couple will remain behind bars after police said they broke into the home of two men killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya last week.
Geybert Alexander Garcia, 40, and Melany Perdomo, 24, are accused of breaking into the home of Adam Hlavaty and Henry Parra, the couple killed in the Aug. 19th helicopter crash in Kenya that took the lives of multiple people with ties to South Florida.
Police said Garcia and Perdomo broke into the Coral Gables home and ransacked the place, stealing business documents, jewelry, luxury cars and artwork, including a sculpture worth about $500,000. They were allegedly caught with the couple’s personal belongings, Range Rover and Porsche Taycan.
In a pre-trial detention hearing on Thursday, the judge upheld Judge Mindy Glazer’s initial decision to hold the couple without bond. Perdomo was also behind bars on an immigration hold.
On Wednesday, the co-defendants claimed in court that they had permission from the victims to enter the home and take their property.
A friend of the victim told Judge Glazer that that was a lie.
“There is no way that they could possibly have signed that document. They were not in the country, first of all,” she said. “Secondly they would have never done so. They have other people. They have a live-in maid that comes to the house every day. There would be no need to do such a thing. The house was damaged. It was broken into. The door was destroyed, they ripped off the camera.”
Their arraignment is set for September.
