Two suspects have been arrested on DUI manslaughter and other charges in separate crashes in Miami-Dade that left two people dead, authorities said.
Kareem Omar Johnson, 34, and Allen Matis, 67, were arrested Wednesday on charges of DUI manslaughter, failure to render aid and vehicular homicide in a reckless manner, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office officials said.
Johnson’s charges stem from a crash that happened the night of May 9 at the intersection of Northwest 22nd Avenue and Southwest 50th Street.
Deputies responded and found crashed vehicles and an unresponsive man who was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
Traffic homicide detectives later determined Johnson had failed to stop at a red light and struck the victim’s vehicle.
At the time, Johnson was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, officials said.
Matis is charged in a crash that happened back on June 24 near the intersection of Southwest 57th Avenue and Southwest 29th Street.
Authorities said Matis had crashed into the wall of a residence, and a man who was found unresponsive inside was pronounced dead.
According to an arrest report, the victim, 82-year-old Henri Bezy, was sleeping inside the home when he became trapped underneath Matis’ Cadillac Lyriq.
Matis, who showed signs of impairment, had failed to stop at a stop sign and was speeding when he crashed, authorities said.
His blood alcohol level was determined to be above the legal limit, authorities said.
Both men were booked into jail, and were expected to appear in bond court. Attorney information wasn’t available.
