Woman killed when Amtrak train hits SUV on Moncrief Road

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman is dead after an Amtrak train struck her SUV Thursday morning in Northwest Jacksonville.

Sgt. Robert Hungerford of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened on Moncrief Road near Restlawn Drive at about 6:30 a.m.

Hungerford said the woman, who was in her mid-30s, was traveling eastbound in a Jeep SUV when a southbound Amtrak train struck the vehicle as she crossed the tracks.

Hungerford said the investigation shows the woman likely drove around the crossing arms, which had come down as the train approached.

The woman died at the scene. Her death marks the 118th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.

The train was traveling at about 79 mph — which JSO says is typical for Amtrak along that stretch — and was headed from Chicago to Tampa carrying 150 passengers and crew. No injuries were reported on the train.
