Crocodile attack kills dog in South Miami; police issue safety warning

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. (CBS12) — South Miami police are warning residents to keep children and pets away from canals and other waterways after a crocodile attack killed a dog Thursday.

The attack was reported behind a home in the 6200 block of Southwest 64th Court, police said in a public safety advisory.

The dog, an 8-year-old Dutch shepherd named Kygo, was in the backyard when it got too close to the shoreline and was attacked, the dog’s owner told WSVN. A neighbor later found the dog less than a mile away near Southwest 63rd Court and 56th Street, WSVN reported.

Police urged residents not to approach, feed, harass or try to capture crocodiles. They advised pet owners to keep animals leashed near water and asked residents to use caution around canals, ponds and other areas where crocodiles may be present.

American crocodiles are protected under state and federal law. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the incident, according to WSVN.
