As dengue fever spreads across Tampa Bay, health officials encourage safety measures

The Pasco County Mosquito Control District is encouraging people to take precautions as more locally acquired dengue cases are confirmed in the area.

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Dengue fever cases are increasing in the Tampa Bay area, and local health officials are asking people to take precautions to prevent the spread.

Pasco County confirmed a case of dengue earlier this week. Health officials are investigating how and where the disease was transmitted.

The Pasco County case comes after Hillsborough, Pasco and Citrus counties also reported locally acquired cases this month.

The Pasco County Mosquito Control District says protection against dengue starts with keeping mosquitoes away from yourself and your home. They suggest the following measures to limit the chances of mosquito bites:

Dump and drain standing water around homes and businesses at least once a week.Use EPA-registered insect repellent containing an active ingredient such as DEET, picaridin or IR3535.Cover up with long sleeves, long pants, and socks when possible.Close doors and keep windows properly screened.Check your property for small containers and any items that can hold water.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 149 confirmed cases of dengue have been reported in Florida this year — by far the most in the U.S. 

The latest CDC data, updated as of Aug. 26, lists at least 36 cases reported in Hillsborough County and one to four in Pinellas.
