“Dump Duke” files paperwork for St. Pete ballot measure

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A group in St. Petersburg wants voters to decide the future of Duke Energy’s agreement with the city.

The group, “Dump Duke”, filed paperwork with the city to begin gathering signatures for a ballot measure.

The measure would let voters decide whether the city should switch from Duke Energy to a city-run utility program.

Duke Energy is still serving St. Petersburg even though its franchise agreement with the city ended this month. The city is waiting on the results of a study into how feasible it would be to switch from Duke Energy to a city-run utility program.

If the ballot measure moves forward, voters would decide the issue rather than the St. Petersburg City Council.
