A 15-year-old girl is expected to survive after she was shot early Saturday morning in Fort Lauderdale, police said.
Fort Lauderdale Police responded to the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 9th Street at approximately 3:45 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting.
Officers found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began providing aid until Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived, police said.
The teen was taken to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert with serious injuries.
Police later said she is expected to survive.
The girl’s grandmother, Cynthia Scriven-Husband, told NBC6 the family believes the shooting may have followed a confrontation involving someone the teenager knew.
“My granddaughter was shot by a friend, an ex-friend, we understand,” Scriven-Husband said.
She said the family was told someone came to the home threatening the teenager.
“All we know is that apparently they came to the house and was threatening her and said they wanted to fight her. And her and her friends came out the door and the next thing they know was pow, pow, pow, pow,” Scriven-Husband said.
She said she received a phone call and went to the home.
“I went in and she was laying on the floor surrounded by blood,” she said.
Police have not released additional details about what led up to the shooting or identified a suspect.
