CORAL GABLES, Fla. (CBS12) — Two suspects are behind bars after allegedly targeting the South Florida home of a couple killed in a Kenya helicopter crash — and police say this may just scratch the surface of a sprawling identity theft investigation.

Officers with the Coral Gables Police Department arrested 40-year-old Geybert Garcia and 24-year-old Melany Perdomo on Tuesday after investigators said they burglarized the home of 55-year-old Henry Parra and 42-year-old Adam Hlavaty.

Parra and Hlavaty were killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya, according to CBS Miami.

Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak said Friday that investigators believe Garcia and Perdomo targeted the home after learning the couple had died. Police say a ping from the couple’s stolen MacBook led investigators to Garcia and Perdomo.

“We believe right now, they were targeted the day they were killed in that crash,” Hudak said during a news conference. “Which I find reprehensible.”

Police say the suspects allegedly stole jewelry, artwork and vehicles from the home.

But investigators said the case appears to go far beyond one burglary.

A search warrant at a Miami-Dade home in the 8300 block of Northwest 195th Terrace led investigators to passports, driver’s licenses, firearms, computers, DVRs and other evidence, according to police.

Authorities also said they found evidence that fraudulent identification documents were being produced.

“They had printed a fake ID with the two individuals’ address in the printer,” Hudak said.

Police say they believe the identities of Parra and Hlavaty may have been used as part of the alleged scheme.

The investigation also uncovered stolen vehicles. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, detectives initially found a stolen truck with a California license plate, which led them to five stolen vehicles.

Police also recovered at least a dozen firearms, Hudak said.

“This is a case that has many tentacles,” Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle told CBS Miami, calling it “shocking and unfathomable” that the alleged crimes occurred while families were mourning the loss of their loved ones.

Hudak said investigators are working with federal partners, including the U.S. Secret Service, as they examine potential identity theft and financial crimes.

Investigators said they found boxes of documents that could belong to additional potential victims.

“We have just scratched the surface of this criminal enterprise,” Hudak said. “We have basically kicked the beehive of a criminal enterprise.”

Police are warning that additional arrests could be coming as investigators work to determine how many people may have been affected.

“We know there are going to be other arrests,” Hudak said.

Garcia and Perdomo have been ordered held in jail without bond. They are scheduled to be arraigned next month.
