TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Tallahassee woman is bringing words of encouragement to a unit of 29 Florida National Guardsmen currently deployed in the Middle East, including her son.
Margaret Summers turned to social media to invite people to a local coffee shop to help write cards for the service members.
“I knew my hand would get tired writing 29 cards, and I wanted each card to be original,” she said.
She plans to include the cards in a care package she will send Monday.
Summers said her son told her the soldiers would appreciate receiving cards from home.
“He has a lot of soldiers under him, and I know he wants to keep their spirits up and wants them to feel like they are thought about,” Summers said.

Summers said she knows the deployment can be difficult for the soldiers. “It’s hot, it’s dusty, it’s not like home, and family is far away,” she said.
For Summers, the cards are a simple way to remind the service members that they are supported and remembered while serving overseas.
People who missed Saturday’s meetup will have another opportunity to participate next Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Starbucks at 1960 Gainesborough Ln in Tallahassee.
