Why today’s game matters

The Seminoles are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 5-7 campaign, while the Aggies enter the year hoping to improve on a 4-8 record and return to bowl contention.

The spotlight will be on Florida State as Mike Norvell’s team attempts to take a step forward after missing a bowl game last season. The Seminoles averaged 33 points per game in 2025 and revamped several key positions during the offseason, including quarterback, where transfer Ashton Daniels is expected to lead the offense. Florida State also added talent along the offensive line and at several skill positions in an effort to re-establish itself as an ACC contender.

New Mexico State faces a difficult road assignment to open the season but brings back notable experience. The Aggies have an experienced offensive line and are expected to rely on transfer quarterback Trey Hedden after struggling offensively for much of last season. New Mexico State averaged 21.6 points per game in 2025 and will look for improvement after finishing 4-8.

For Florida State, Saturday’s game is about building momentum before a challenging stretch of opponents later in the schedule. For New Mexico State, it’s an opportunity to test itself against a Power Four program and measure where the roster stands heading into conference play.
