Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis was attacked and dragged across a road in front of his home by his former romantic partner Saturday, police say. His alleged assaulter was arrested and jailed Wednesday.

Daniel Curran, 34, is facing charges of battery on a person 65 years of age or older and violating a domestic violence injunction, according to the Broward Clerk of Courts’ website. As of Friday afternoon, he still remains in the Broward County Main Jail.

Trantalis and Curran were in a relationship since March and had been living together in the same home for an unknown amount of time, the arrest report read.

During a first appearance hearing before Broward Circuit Court Judge Corey Friedman Friday morning, 72-year-old Trantalis said the Saturday altercation began when he was trying to reconnect with Curran, WSVN 7 News reported.

“I thought maybe there was some way to rehabilitate Danny by trying to reconnect and hopefully steer him into counseling and mental health treatment, and I failed at that,” Trantalis said during the hearing.

During the altercation on Saturday, Curran pushed the mayor outside his home, prompting Trantalis to push back in self-defense, Fort Lauderdale police said. Curran then grabbed Trantalis’ leg and pulled him to the ground, then reportedly dragged him 15 feet across the road.

Trantalis injured his wrist, left leg and right knee. The mayor later called police, who were aware of the domestic violence injunction between the pair, and arrested Curran on Wednesday when they saw him in Trantalis’ driveway.

In a sealed September Broward court case, Curran was ordered to stay away from the mayor and restrain himself from “assaulting, threatening, abusing, harassing, following, interfering or stalking” Trantalis.

In the Thursday hearing, Friedman set Curran’s bond at $6,000, assigning a $1,000 for the injunction violation and $5,000 for the battery, records show.

The Broward State Attorney’s Office has requested the Office of Gov. Ron DeSantis for an executive assignment, so the case can be handled by a state attorney’s office in a different jurisdiction.

Curran was also ordered to have no further contact with the mayor, not to return to his home and to turn over any guns, weapons or ammunition he may possess.
