Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a new statewide emergency management education program during a press conference at Florida International University on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
The program, called the “Coalition for Operational Readiness and Education” (CORE), aims to give college students hands-on training and opportunities to enter the emergency management field. The program is a partnership between the Florida Division of Emergency Management, FloridaCommerce and the Florida Department of Education.
FIU will help lead the program through its Academy for International Disaster Preparedness. The academy trains students and professionals in areas including emergency management, first response and disaster recovery. Eleven state colleges have already committed to adopting the program.
During the press conference, DeSantis also addressed concerns over automated license plate reader cameras, including Flock systems used by law enforcement. “I think these cameras, the license plate readers, I think it’s out of control,” DeSantis said. He said he supports law enforcement using technology to hold criminals accountable but does not want the systems to create a “surveillance state.”
