GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers are trading Kyle McCord to the Miami Dolphins, sources confirmed to PackersNews.
ESPN initially reported the Packers will receive a 2028 sixth-round draft pick.
After trading Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Dolphins needed a backup for ex-Packers quarterback Malik Willis.
The ties from the Packers to the Dolphins continue to grow as McCord joins Willis, ex-Packers defensive coordinator and new Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley, and former Packers front office staff member and new Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.
McCord expressed a desire to stay in Green Bay after a strong performance in preseason, but the Packers are sticking with veteran Tyrod Taylor to back up Jordan Love.
“Just the luxury of having that experience in the room and having a guy that’s played as much as he has,” Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said Aug. 26 about Taylor. “That guy really does support Jordan [Love] in a ton of ways. He’s very experienced there. Very fortunate to have him.
“We brought Tyrod in here for a reason and we’re happy to have him.”
McCord increased his value this summer. He went 46-for-70 (65.7%) passing for 446 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 102.44 passer rating this preseason.
He shined in the Packers’ 42-38 victory over the Arizona Cardinals to close preseason, rallying the team from an 11-point deficit in the final 5 minutes. McCord finished the game going 22-of-35 for 226 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions, a 119.5 passer rating and orchestrating a game-winning drive in the final minute.
“Every single game in the NFL comes down to those type of situations and situational football this preseason has been really good,” McCord said after his performance against Arizona. “I definitely feel I accomplished that this preseason.”
“He did a heck of a job,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said of McCord after the game. “He was so poised, and his ability to operate and function, he definitely has the demeanor, no doubt about it. He’s in total control out there, and he’s willing to stand in the pocket and deliver and face pressure. Yeah, I thought he did an outstanding job.”
With the reported draft pick in the McCord trade, the Packers have eight selections in the 2028 draft and up to 11 in 2027.
