TAMPA, Fla. — A man has been arrested after a deadly shooting late Saturday night on North Nebraska Avenue, according to the Tampa Police Department (TPD).
Officers responded shortly after 11 p.m. to the 7100 block of North Nebraska Avenue for reports of a fight involving several people, according to a news release.
When officers arrived, they found a man in his late 30s suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, TPD said.
Police said 43-year-old Fletcher McCray approached officers and admitted to shooting the victim.
According to investigators, a group of people, including McCray, had been involved in a fight earlier in the evening at another location. Police said the victim was not involved in that earlier altercation.
Detectives said the dispute continued after the group arrived at a motel on Nebraska Avenue. McCray told police he shot the victim because he felt threatened.
However, after reviewing surveillance video, detectives determined the footage did not appear to support McCray’s account. Police said the video showed the victim with his hands raised immediately before the shooting.
McCray was arrested and charged with second-degree murder with discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The investigation remains active.
