Joey Aguilar returns to Knoxville for youth football camp
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Former Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars as part of the team’s final roster cuts ahead of the 2026 NFL regular season.
Aguilar will now head to the NFL waiver wire, where any of the league’s other 31 franchises can claim him. If he clears waivers unclaimed, Jacksonville reportedly hopes to sign him to its practice squad.
In the preseason, Aguilar threw for 187 yards and a touchdown.
A return to Jacksonville may not be Aguilar’s only option. Earlier this week, the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats added Aguilar to their exclusive negotiation list.
Under CFL rules, each franchise can protect the exclusive rights to 45 unsigned players who are currently in the NFL or other professional leagues. With Hamilton claiming those rights, the Tiger-Cats are the only CFL team permitted to negotiate a contract with the quarterback.
Tennessee has a storied history of sending Volunteers north of the border. Most famously, Condredge Holloway won two Grey Cups, one with the Ottawa Roughriders in 1975 and a second with the Toronto Argonauts in 1983. He was named the league’s most outstanding player in 1982 and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
This past year, Harriman native and former Vol Jeremaine Copeland was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Copeland won two Grey Cups during an 11-year CFL career.
Aguilar’s Tennessee teammate, Star Thomas, is currently with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
