The surging Tampa Bay Rays (82-54) enter Monday night with the best record in the American League, with four straight wins and six victories in their last seven games as they open a three-game series with the New York Mets (61-76) at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Rays lead the American League East by four-and-a-half games over the New York Yankees and hold the best record in the AL. Tampa Bay’s 46-23 record at home is second-best in MLB behind only the Atlanta Braves’ mark of 48-23. New York, meanwhile, has dropped four of five and remains in last place in the NL East.

Jonny DeLuca connected for a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth and Jorge Mateo singled home the winning run in the 11th as Tampa Bay came from behind to complete a sweep of the visiting San Diego Padres with a 5-4 victory on Sunday. Junior Caminero’s fourth-inning blast stood as the Rays’ lone run before DeLuca took All-Star closer Mason Miller deep in the ninth. DeLuca also delivered a game-tying grounder in the 11th before Mateo’s walk-off knock.
The Mets couldn’t hold a 3-2 lead on Sunday as they lost the series-clinching game to the Houston Astros 6-3 to close out a 2-4 homestand. Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto started the bottom of the first with back-to-back home runs for a 2-1 lead and New York went ahead with a run scoring on a double-play grounder in the fifth before Houston rallied. Soto’s homer was his first since July 9 after he returned on Saturday from a stay of more than a month on the injured list with a strained calf.
Left-hander Ian Seymour (9-5) takes the mound for the Rays on Monday night, coming in with a 4.21 ERA and 1.150 WHIP in 41 appearances, including 11 starts, covering 107 innings while striking out 128. Right-hander Robert Stock (0-3) gets the ball for New York as he enters with a 7.40 ERA and 1.935 WHIP in 20.2 innings over five starts.
