Off-duty Cape Coral police officer arrested on battery, assault charges in Lee County
CAPE CORAL, Fla. —
An off-duty Cape Coral police officer was arrested Sunday following a disturbance in Lee County.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, Officer Travis Harrison was arrested on charges of battery and simple assault. CCPD said the incident happened outside of Cape Coral’s city limits, and the investigation is being handled by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office.
CCPD is conducting an internal affairs investigation that’s separate from the criminal investigation. The police department said the internal affairs investigation will determine whether any department policies, procedures, or standards of conduct were violated.
CCPD Chief Anthony Sizemore shared the following statement:
“The badge carries with it a responsibility to meet a high standard of conduct, both on and off duty. When allegations arise involving one of our employees, we have a responsibility to address them appropriately, thoroughly, and transparently. The trust our community places in this department is something we take very seriously, and we are committed to maintaining that trust through accountability while upholding the standards expected of everyone who wears this badge.”
Harrison has been placed on administrative leave as the internal affairs investigation is conducted, consistent with the department protocol, according to CCPD.
Harrison was a finalist for the Rotary Club of Fort Myers South’s Officer of the Year award this year.
