In July, Cipriani Residences, in the Brickell neighborhood, became the tallest building in Miami and the tallest residential building south of New York City. […] Supertalls (skyscrapers over 984 feet) and megatalls (buildings taller than 1,968 feet) are still relatively rare engineering anomalies. Currently, megatalls exist only in Asia and the Middle East.

A recent NYT piece explains Miami’s supercharged aspirations to fill its skyline with ever-taller buildings, including the recently topped-out 950-foot Cipriani Residences Miami, Waldorf Astoria Residences, Aston Martin Residences, Delano Residences, Mercedes-Benz Residences, Miami Riverbridge, Dolce & Gabbana, Okan Tower, One Bayfront, Citadel’s new HQ, and Trump’s presidential ‘library’ hotel proposal.
The authors don’t fail to include the enormous geological and meteorological concerns that South Florida’s challenging ground composition and hurricane-prone climate pose for this new crop of real estate development, with sinking buildings described in an alarming recent University of Miami study.
