VIDEO: Violent crash in Port St. Lucie damages trucks, highlights speeding concerns
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. —
Two parked trucks were heavily damaged in a violent crash in Port St. Lucie Sunday.
Security video recorded the crash, which shows a black truck traveling at a high rate of speed on SW Lucero Drive around 3:40 p.m.
The truck goes off the road into the grass and then slams into the two parked trucks.
“When I heard the crash, I thought it was thunder,” Elaine Harmon, a neighbor, said.
“I heard a loud explosion,” said another neighbor, Rocky Burkhead. “Thought it was just lightning like we’ve been having over the last few days.”
But when Burkhead stepped outside, he realized the situation was far worse than a weather-related incident.
“I had no idea what to think. I was just at a loss for words. My first concern was, ‘Is he OK?'” Burkhead said.
Port St. Lucie police said the man in the black truck sustained only minor injuries.
However, Burkhead said the damage to the two parked trucks hit in the collision was extensive. Both trucks belong to Burkhead and are essential for his pressure washing business.
“It stops my business. I had to rent a U-Haul today. You’re limited on what you can do, how far you can go,” Burkhead said.
Neighbors said the crash is the most dramatic example of speeding on Southwest Lucero Drive but emphasized it is not an isolated incident.
The speed limit on the road is 25 mph, but residents said drivers rarely adhere to it.
“People do fly by on this road all the time,” Courtney Gray, a neighbor, said.
“There’s a big problem with speeding on this road,” Burkhead said.
Residents are particularly concerned because the road lacks sidewalks, yet many people walk along it with children and pets.
“I walk every day with (my baby) in the stroller or whatever. I’m just so thankful we weren’t home when it happened,” Gray said.
“I think what they need to do is put some officers in the area, pull a few people over with some heavy-duty fines,” Burkhead said.
“Seems like something like this is going to keep happening if we don’t have speed bumps,” Gray said.
Port St. Lucie police have not yet responded to inquiries about arrests related to the crash or the possibility of speed bumps or additional patrols.
